CIS Wake Students Explore the Wilderness of Wake County
12/17/2006
CIS Wake is partnering with the Sierra Club's Inner City Outings program to bring the classroom to the forest. This partnership provides CIS Wake's students with the opportunity to explore, enjoy, and protect the natural world.
On Saturday, December 16th eight students from CIS Wake’s Heritage Park community went to a Christmas tree farm to select a tree, then enjoyed a cookout and an afternoon of fishing at Lake Wheeler. The tree was given to a student and her family for her outstanding scholastic achievement.
In the picture, one of our youngest students is working with the 87 year old Christmas tree farmer to saw down the tree. After sawing down just the right tree, the students were able to tell the age of tree by inspecting the stump – five years old, just like our young student!
CIS Wake would like to thank the Sierra Club and its volunteers for making this partnership possible. Whenever possible, we enjoy providing our students with 'hands-on' learning opportunities that extend beyond the walls of a classroom or a learning center.
