Consider the story of Davonte:
Davonte is 15 and regularly attends programming at a Communities In Schools of Wake County learning center. Recently, as a reward
for his hard work in bringing up and maintaining his grades, his tutor / mentor took Davonte to dinner and a performance of the
North Carolina Symphony.
Davonte was mesmerized at the sound an orchestra could make! Davonte and his tutor / mentor talked about how an orchestra is the sum of its parts, just like life.
The tutor / mentor recounted: "The real value of the night's events for me came when I went to drop Davonte off at his home in public housing. It was about 10pm on a Friday night and there were so many children and adults out in the road and just milling outside. There was no grass in sight and the housing is right next to a loud road.
"Davonte's neighborhood was a stark contrast to the trappings of the symphony - just blocks away. It was a reminder of the poverty, barriers, and harsh reality children like Davonte face every day of their life."
"I drove away realizing it is important not to underestimate or overestimate doing something positive for a child — but it is essential to do something. Communities In Schools of Wake County is doing something to end the cycle of poverty for children like Davonte. That's why I invest my time and money in Communities In Schools of Wake County and urge others to do the same. If we don't help these kids, who will?"
